Ten Low Effort Ways to Actually Use Spirulina

Spirulina is one of the most nutrient dense things you can add to your diet. On its own, it is also a hard sell. The flavor is famously pond like, which is exactly why most jars end up shoved to the back of the cupboard.

The fix is simple. Do not eat it on its own. Spirulina is a powder, which makes it easy to hide in food and drinks you already enjoy. Here are ten ways to get it in without the face you are bracing for. New to spirulina? Start with our plain guide to what it is and what it does.

1. In your tea

Stir it into a strongly flavored herbal tea. Peppermint works especially well, and the herb largely covers the spirulina. A gentle way in if you like hot drinks.

2. In your coffee

Coffee is bold enough to mask almost anything, and cream and sugar help. A small scoop disappears into your morning cup.

3. In juice

Apple or orange juice carries spirulina well, and the sweetness balances the earthiness. Orange is the crowd favorite. Go light on sugar if you are watching that.

4. In a smoothie

The classic, and for good reason. Smoothies let you flavor right over the spirulina. Try a ripe banana, a cup of strawberries, a cup of yogurt, a handful of ice, a spoon of honey, and a scoop of spirulina, blended smooth.

5. In ice cream

For a treat that is at least a little redeeming, stir spirulina into a dark, sweet ice cream. Dark chocolate hides it entirely. You would never know it was there.

6. In homemade pasta or meatballs

Swap a small amount of flour for spirulina when you make fresh pasta. No time for that? Work it into meatballs instead. Use a pound of lean ground beef, half a cup of breadcrumbs, an egg, chopped parsley, salt, pepper, and a scoop of spirulina. Roll them, bake at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes, and add to your sauce.

7. In soup

Do not build a broth out of spirulina. That way lies regret. Instead, stir a little into a finished soup like chicken noodle, ideally bowl by bowl so you do not change the whole pot. The savory base hides it well.

8. In a yogurt parfait

Layered with fruit and yogurt, spirulina adds nutrition while the sweetness keeps the flavor in check. Works with homemade or whatever you buy.

9. In a milkshake

Not health food, but balance is the whole point. A milkshake is sweet enough that you can use a generous scoop without tasting it.

10. In a protein shake

If you already blend whey, soy, or hemp protein, spirulina rides along easily and bumps up the vitamins and protein in the whole thing. The most convenient option for busy mornings.

Just start somewhere

The point is not to choke down algae. It is to slip a genuinely useful food into things you would eat anyway. Pick one from this list and build from there. And if you ever get brave, yes, you can dry scoop it, but no one is making you.
